Christian Mondragón Interview(s)

PHNX Tribute Jury

Why did you think it was important to join the PHNX jury?
Many festivals have decided to cancel their events during this crisis, and that was a good decision. However, PHNX has had the courage to create a new festival, this time with no fees. This reminded me that we need to keep ideas, the industry, and most importantly, our spirit of creativity, alive. That’s why I’m here. This festival will celebrate the effort of the greatest teams, ideas, and spirits who deserve recognition for their work, and they will inspire us to create new ideas.
What impact do you think the event might have on the industry?
The quality of the winning work could boost and empower creativity in all parts of the industry. A lot of work from small agencies doesn’t get included many different festivals because their budget doesn’t cover the fees required to submit to all of them. With PHNX this obstacle doesn’t exist; any agency of any size can submit their ideas and participate in the festival. This a great opportunity to compete just with amazing ideas, and that’s exciting.
What do you think of the hybrid jury, which includes strategists and journalists alongside creatives?
I believe it is absolutely important and necessary. Our work needs to work for the people who are on the outside. Different points of view allow in-depth discussions around ideas with real power to create impact where they are implemented.
What will you be looking for when you start judging the entries?
Cutting edge work. Brands taking action. Powerful ideas without fireworks.
What lasting impact might the current crisis have on creative work?
In these changing times, brands need to take a side beyond a simple message. Brands need to act in order to demonstrate their real commitment to the world. So now more than ever, we will see less superficial work, and more depth in each layer of communication and creativity.
