Growing up in a small village in Herefordshire, James spent his time writing, shooting, editing, animating and performing in short films. He began screening his work in the local night club where the hugely positive, drug and alcohol fuelled reactions of the audience sealed his love of filmmaking.
Later he signed up to the National Film and Television School. Whilst there he won two awards at the Kodak Student Commercial competition and directed a film starring Ray Winstone. In 2011 his film Splitscreen: A Love Story gained international acclaim and was named 9th most creative video of 2011 by TIME Magazine. His following film, We Were Wanderers on a Prehistoric Earth made for Tourism Malaysia received similar acclaim and was nominated for a Webby Award. In 2012 he was selected for the prestigious Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase.
In 2013 he joined Independent and completed his first film with the company, Room 8, a branded content short film for Bombay Sapphire, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Room 8 won Best Branded Short Film of the Year at the Shots Awards 2013.
Room 8 won a BAFTA for Best Short Film 2014.
Room 8 won a Webby Award 2014.
